It's All About the White Space!

As a digital scrapbooker, I'm always trying to create a layout with visual interest. One of the classic ways to do this is through the use of white space, or sometimes called, negative space.  Very simply put, this is just the open space (color doesn't matter) around a photo and/or focal point in the composition. Rather than filling up a page with multiple photos, elements, text, etc., one photo is all  you need. That really simplifies your layout instantly! By using only a few elements or brush work close to the photo, the viewer's eye is really drawn to your photo, which after all, is the most important part of any layout. Let your photo be the focus!

Here are a couple of my layouts illustrating the use of white space. The first one is truly "white" with just a splash of purple & green to compliment the hydrangea photo. The second one shows that white space doesn't have to be white. In both layouts, minimal elements are placed close to the photo to draw the viewer's eye to the photo.

Next time you're working on a layout, digital or paper, give this technique a try. If you care to share your work with me, leave me a comment and a link/attachment so I can celebrate your accomplishment.

Thanks for stopping by today! I hope you have a wonderful day filled with lots of white space!
